Wilder Learning Officer

The Wilder Learning Officer leads the delivery and development of the Alderney Wildlife Trust’s (AWT) Wilder Learning Programme, supporting the Alderney Community for Nature (ACAN) campaign and the strategic objective of enabling at least one in four Islanders to take meaningful action for nature.

This is a focused, stipend-supported placement designed to help those with previous academic and/or practical, experience build up the skills necessary to secure a paid professional position in the future. The role also places you within a tightly knit team of staff and volunteers with the opportunity to learn and develop skills including outdoor learning, ecology and conservation. The AWT has fundraising plans to try and secure longer-term support to enable the transitioning of this placement into a salaried role, however, this will be dependent on the securing of donations and grants.

Duties

  • Lead the planning, coordination, delivery and review of the Wilder Learning Programme, including Early Years sessions, Forest School, Wilder Beach and outdoor experiential learning.
  • Deliver school-based learning activities and adult learning opportunities linked to volunteering, citizen science and AWT projects.
  • Lead educational engagement with Bumps Pre-School, St Anne's School, the Youth Commission, Youth Club and visiting educational groups, developing and maintaining educational resources, lesson plans and learning materials.
  • Lead the coordination and delivery of the Cultural Enrichment Programme (CEP), including Year 2 sessions and the Year 5 BioBlitz.
  • Work with the Community Engagement Officer to support delivery of the Naturally Connected Young People (NCYP) programme, subject to funding, including session delivery, activity planning, and monitoring and evaluation.
  • Support guided walks, public talks, BioBlitzes, Wildlife Week, National Marine Week and other community engagement and volunteer events, supporting the ACAN campaign and the ‘1 in 4’ objective.
  • Work with the Community Engagement Officer to co-deliver elements of the ACAN campaign and support educational and engagement activities delivered through The Hut, helping integrate Wilder Learning activities into its programme.
  • Support wider AWT activities where appropriate, including volunteer engagement, events and citizen science activities.
  • Assisting in other aspects of the AWT as required; this may include getting actively involved in ecological surveys, the running of the Wildlife Information Centre and Shop and getting out on the ground with volunteers

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to plan, deliver and evaluate engaging outdoor and classroom-based learning sessions for a range of age groups, from early years through to secondary school.
  • Have a basic understanding of, and a genuine interest in, the natural world and ecology.
  • Be willing to learn on the job, be intuitive and show initiative.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with children, teachers, parents and community groups.
  • Be confident working outdoors in all weathers and comfortable leading small groups.
  • Have a kind and friendly personality. Excellent interpersonal skills with a range of demographics from young children to senior members of the community.
  • Be competent with standard Microsoft packages.
