Alderney Wildlife Trust completes ecological consultancy works independently under 'Alderney Wildlife Trust Enterprises Ltd' (AWTE). Past ecological works include:
  • Seabird baseline surveys
  • Terrestrial habitat and species baseline surveys
  • Marine habitat and species baseline surveys
  • Ecological and environmental desk-based reviews for government planning departments/regulators and developers

The trust also completes a range of wildlife surveys and collates a variety of ecological information regarding Alderney's terrestrial and marine environments.

AWTE operates as an independent business, wholly owned by the AWT, and provides Alderney and Channel Island specialist ecological knowledge.

As an island-based consultancy, we understand the importance of localised knowledge and good communication. Our team specialises in building a clear picture of a client’s needs, ensuring communication with local interest groups, specialists, and Government. Though we are an Alderney-based consultancy, we work closely with other businesses and governments throughout the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, and Overseas Territories and are able to provide services in a wide range of jurisdictions. 

Our Services include:

  • Ecological surveys including habitat surveys and protected species surveys 

From baseline phase one surveys, to detailed studies of specific species or habitats, our staff and contractors cover a wide range of specialties, with localised knowledge.

  • Ecology elements of Environmental Impact Assessment 

AWTE specialises in designing and delivering ecological surveys for environmental impact assessment and scoping for developments.  Studies have been wide-ranging from major EIA assessments for renewable energy to single building assessments for private developers.

  • Environmental Planning Advice

Working closely with the Alderney Planning Office, and with a detailed knowledge of the Alderney Land Use Plan, AWTE can provide support and advice on environmental aspects of the island’s planning process.  Services include mitigation advice, design support and scoping guidance.   

  • Land management and habitat creation

Be it private landowners, government or business, AWTE can help support landowners in the management of their land to create a biologically diverse, sustainable and enjoyable landscape.  Previous projects include the design and creation of wildlife gardens, ponds, woodland and recovery and management of grasslands (wildlife-rich lawns). 

  • Wildlife-friendly, sustainable building

Utilising its local knowledge and resources AWTE has been able to help architects, developers and property owners to mitigate building works to reduce their impact on the island’s environment. This ranges from finding better locations within the surrounding landscape to the inclusion of wildlife-friendly features.

  • GIS and data entry 

Provision of Geographical Information System Services, mapping, data entry and report preparation.  Projects include the mapping of key features within proposed development sites, utilising AWTE’s extensive GIS layers including those for geographical, physical and ecological features, and processing this information into user-friendly formats.
