Leaving a Legacy: Safeguarding Alderney’s Wildlife for Future Generations
Alderney’s natural beauty and rich biodiversity are a key part of what makes the island so special.
From its rugged cliffs to thriving seabird colonies and rare habitats, Alderney is home to wildlife found in few other places. At the heart of this, the Alderney Wildlife Trust work tirelessly to conserve, educate and inspire.
As a small charity, Alderney Wildlife Trust relies on the generosity of its supporters to sustain its vital work moving forward.
Whilst membership fees and donations provide essential funding, the longer term conservation work requires more substantial support financially.
How will your legacy help the Alderney Wildlife Trust

What is a Will?
Your Will is an important legal document that ensures those you care about are provided for after your death and allows you to decide what happens to your assets and possessions.
It is entirely your choice what happens to your assets upon your death.
We know that your first priority will always be to provide for your loved ones, but many people find that they also want to leave a gift to a charity.
A legacy is a powerful and lasting way to ensure that your support for the Alderney Wildlife Trust continues to be recognised when you pass. It is a way to show your support and commitment to the charity financially and allows the Trust to maintain its work.
Advocates
You are entirely free to write or amend your own Will, and there are free online Will providers such Bequethed, however, it is recommended to use an Advocate or Lawyer to ensure everything is in order.
Why getting legal advice when making a Will matters
Many people believe a straightforward Will is all they need. But in reality, personal circumstances are often more complex, and a simple Will might not cover everything or could even cause problems later on.
Making a Will without legal advice can lead to mistakes or unclear wording, especially if you have several beneficiaries or more complex finances. If that happens, it will fall to your executor to sort things out, which can be stressful and may involve legal costs. These costs could reduce the value of your Estate and the amount left for your loved ones.
By going through a professionally guided process, you’ll gain a clear understanding of all the factors that affect you and those you care about. This helps you avoid common mistakes or oversights that could lead to your Will being challenged in future.
Most Advocates in the Bailiwick of Guernsey will offer Will services, but if you do not have an Advocate, we would suggest;
Advocate Simon Geall, Randell & Loveridge, 1-6 Court Row, St Peter Port, Guernsey, GY1 2PD
This firm are not directly involved with the Alderney Wildlife Trust; however, we have a connection to them through our support staff and understand that they provide a professional and considerate service.

You have the option of leaving a charitable gift to Alderney Wildlife Trust through your Will, either directly or via the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). By naming CAF in your Will and leaving them a Letter of Wishes, you can instruct CAF to distribute your gift to your chosen charities, such as AWT. This approach gives you peace of mind, as you can update your Letter of Wishes with CAF at any time without needing to amend your Will.
Leaving a gift to charity in your Will can also reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax payable on your estate, as gifts to charity are exempt from Inheritance Tax. In addition, if you leave at least 10% of your net estate to charity, your estate can also benefit from a reduced tax rate. Find out more here.
