Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (Bird Flu, HPAI)

An unprecedented outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), commonly known as 'Bird Flu', has spread world wide, with cases in seabirds throughout Europe, the UK and the Channel Islands.
In Alderney, we are particularly concerned for the future of our Northern Gannet colonies situated in Ortac and Les Etacs. Alderney hosts around 1% of the global population of this seabird and therefore it is important that this outbreak is tracked and monitored closely.

How can you help?
The most important thing for you to do is to keep a safe distance from any dead seabirds and report any sightings. Please consider doing this if you are in any of the Channel Islands or Normandy or Brittany, by reporting the birds to your nearest local authority. PLEASE ALSO RECORD YOUR SIGHTING USING THE REPORTING FORM BELOW. If when making your report you can see a metal ring, or plastic colour ring, attached to the birds leg please note the number and report that as well.
