About the event

Here are our suggestions for your 12 Days Wild on Alderney. You can take it at your own pace and make adjustments based on your interests.

25 December: Take a town walk

If you’re walking with children, we have a spotter sheet to help keep little ones engaged.

26 December: Go on the Boxing Day walk with us (from 2 PM, meeting at the Wildlife Centre)

27 December: Take part in a beach clean at Crabby Bay (from 2:00 pm).

28 December: Learn about moths

You can find out the top moths for 2025 that moth recorder Lou Collings has compiled.
If you’re keen to learn more, we also recommend Much Ado About Mothing by James Lowen.

29 December: Stargazing

Wrap up warm, head outside, look up, and let the night sky dazzle you. Try looking for the Plough, Cassiopeia, and Orion! You can use a stargazing app to help you!

30 December: Write your resolutions for the year ahead, both personal and for nature.

31 December: Visit one of Alderney’s nature reserves.

Choose from the Community Woodland, Bonne Terre, Vau du Saou, or Longis and enjoy a walk. You can also try using iRecord or iNaturalist apps to record your wildlife sightings on the way.

1 January: Brush up on your tree knowledge by reading about species such as English oak, sessile oak, holm oak, elm, alder, elder, and hawthorn. https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/wildlife-explorer/trees-and-shrubs

2 January: Take part in the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland’s New Year Plant Hunt

3 January: Become a Conservation Volunteer.

Join us to clear the footpaths across several sites. Meet at the AWT office at 1:45pm

4 January: Learn about Grey Seal

Even in winter, you can spot seals bobbing in the water! Seals have been recorded across Alderney’s bays! Why not learn a bit about these inquisitive semi-aquatic animals?

5 January: Listen to birdsong!

Try using the Merlin app to record birdsong and identify who’s singing.
