This week of research and study aims to grow our knowledge of the resident bat population on Alderney

The Alderney Wildlife Trust (AWT) are delighted to host the Alderney Bat Week 2019, with Annyctalus Ecology in collaboration with UK based bat researchers and training providers. The aim of the week will be to substantially grow our knowledge of the resident bat population here on Alderney which, thanks to Ani Binet, Mariko Whyte, Anna Sutcliffe and the Jersey Bat Group amongst others, is rapidly expanding. Since 2016 the species list for Alderney has increased by a further 5 potential species to give us the list of Common, Soprano, Nathusius and potentially Kuhl’s Pipistrelle, as well as Grey Long-eared, Natterer’s, Whiskered and possibly Brandt’s bats and a confirmed Barbastelle (Joe English, ABO).
At only 3.5 x 1.5 miles Alderney is home to 36 NVC classed habitats, has seacaves, WWII and Victorian tunnels and fortifications and one of the most diverse arrays of lepidoptera, by area, in the British Isles. The Island also lies only 8 miles off the French coast and is on the main migratory route for birds, and potentially bats, moving up the Atlantic seaboard.

The purpose of the week will be:

1. To run systematic surveys using bat detectors, harp traps, mist nets and acoustic lures, in addition to roost scoping surveys and bat box checks throughout the course of the week for intermediate and experienced chiropterologists, as well as an opportunity to discuss a range of topics and issues
2. To offer training to beginners and those wishing to grow their skills with the opportunity to support the full surveys in the evenings.
The week will be based around the survey programme but the AWT will also be looking to provide other events and activities for those involved.

The Alderney Wildlife Trust will provide conference and lab facilities for planning and running of activities, workshops etc.
The AWT will also be happy to offer activities outside of the bat work including a free Kayaking tour, and guided walks, as well as discounted seabird boat tours (Puffins, Fulmars and lots and lots of Gannets, plus a few Grey Seals).

All attendees will receive a welcome pack including maps and a guide book for the island, and if they mention Alderney Bat Week and the Wildlife Trust to any of the service providers below they will find themselves eligible for a discount.
