Grey Long-eared BatGrey Long-eared Bat

Latin name: Plecotus austriacus

The Grey Long-eared is one of rarest bats on Britain. On Alderney it is only known from dead or injured specimens. Its large ears are sensitive to the faintest of sounds and its quiet echolocation call is the reason behind it’s other moniker “The Whispering Bat.” The Grey Long-eared is the largest bat on Alderney with a wingspan between 25 to 30 cm.

Active Season: April/May to August/September.

Echolocation Frequency: Strongest at 28 kHz.
