Latin name: Cancer pagurus

Description: This species has a large, reddish, oval carapace, with an edge that represents a pie crust. The chelae (claws) are black tipped and extremely large. Adults can grow to 250mm and live to 20 years old. It is a commercially important fisheries species.

Habitat: The species is found in the lower regions of intertidal environments, sublittoral and offshore environments. This includes mixed, coarse, and muddy substrates or underneath boulders and rocks.

Status: Widespread throughout UK and Channel Islands.
