Green-winged Orchid

Green-winged Orchid - Bill BlackGreen-winged Orchid - Bill Black

Latin name: Anacamptis morio

The Green-winged Orchid is Alderney’s earliest orchid to come into flower, usually from mid to late April through to June.  The flowers are usually purple, with prominent green veins which give it its name, but occasionally white specimens are found. It prefers infertile, nutrient poor grassland and for this reason has declined in the UK because of agricultural improvement.  On Alderney it can be found at the eastern end of the island - on the Mannez Garenne and along the eastern coastal track.

Status in Alderney:  Scarce

Status Worldwide (IUCN Red List): Near Threatened
