Latin name: Macroglossum stellatarum

Forewing length: 20-24mm.

A frequent immigrant to Britain but most common near the south coast and Channel Islands. It occurs anywhere with appropriate food sources when immigrants arrive from April to December, but they are most common in August and September.

Identifying feature: Most noticeable feature is its flight pattern, resembling a Hummingbird as it hovers at tubular flowers during the daytime. The orange-brown colour of the hindwing is evident during flight whilst the forewings are grey-brown.
