Latin name: Hipparchia semele

The distinguishing feature of this butterfly is its remarkable camouflage, hiding the orange forewings behind the mottled hind-wings to become almost invisible as it tilts thus avoiding creation of a shadow. It is a common resident of Alderney found predominantly in the heathland and rocky areas such as Trois Vaux and around the Longis Reserve.
