Latin name: Galathea squamifera

Description: The squat lobster is an elongate crustacean species, with the carapace growing up to 35mm and a total length of 65mm. The first pair of pereopods are 1.5 times longer than the body, with a triangular rostrum with 4 spines on either side. Colours range from brown to green with red tipped spines. The carapace comprises of short hairs and looks shiny. Females carry their eggs in late winter and spring.

Habitat: This species is found in the lower regions of intertidal rocky shorelines and sublittoral environments.

Status: Widespread throughout UK and Channel Islands.
