Latin name: Haliotis tuberculata

Description: Ormers are a large mollusc, growing to 10 cm. They have a flattened shell that looks like an ear. One end of the shell forms into a tight spiral. Along the edge of the shell are a curved line of holes; with the inside an iridescent mother of pearl colouration. Ormers are black in colour, with a large number of green tentacles.

Habitat: Ormers are found in the lower regions of intertidal rocky shorelines and subtidal environments. They are herbivores feeding on a range of macroalgae.

Status: Common in the Channel Islands but uncommon in Europe.
