The Winter Stalkball is found in stony and sandy soil amongst moss and short, alkaline, undisturbed grassland, especially in coastal areas, from September to January. It resembles a puffball on stilts with a globular ball containing a small pore sitting on a twig-like stalk no more than 4cm tall, part of which will be buried in the sand.

On Alderney it can be found within the Longis Reserve along the east coastal track.
