Candle-snuff Fungus - Brian BonnardCandle-snuff Fungus - Brian Bonnard

Latin name: Xylaria hpoxylon --INEDIBLE--

This small fungus, just 3-7cm high, is found in groups growing on dead stumps throughout the year, but particularly in autumn. The antler-like stems (its other name is Stag’s Horn fungus) are black at the base but white and branched towards the top and if you tap them a cloud of white spore powder will be released. It is quite strong and rubbery and can be bent without being broken.
