Blackening Waxcap

Blackening Waxcap - Bill BlackBlackening Waxcap - Bill Black

Latin name: Hygrocybe conica --POISONOUS--

The Blackening Waxcap is one of the commonest of the waxcaps. It can be red, orange, yellow or black but the distinguishing feature is that the entire fungus blackens with age even after picking. It is a mushroom of short unimproved grassland and is localised in the UK because of loss of habitat. It can be found between late summer and early winter.

Look for it on Alderney around the Longis Reserve and parts of the Giffoine.
