This is a focused and very high intensity work placement, where you will be expected to take on significant levels of responsibility working within an established Reserves team. This placement is focused on undertaking a systematic review of a long term grazing animals project with the intention of creating a new, dynamic strategy for using grazing animals as a conservation tool on the island of Alderney. The successful candidate will also be working within the Reserves team in all aspects of reserves management.

Objective of the Placement
This is a focused and very high intensity work placement, where you will be expected to take on significant levels of responsibility working within an established Reserves team. This placement is focused on undertaking a systematic review of a long term grazing animals project with the intention of creating a new, dynamic strategy for using grazing animals as a conservation tool on the island of Alderney. The successful candidate will also be working within the Reserves team in all aspects of reserves management.

Key Opportunities:
• Taking the lead in reviewing and shaping the future of the longest established conservation grazing effort in the Channel Islands. Including stakeholder engagement, negotiation and presentation to government officials and publication of the final report.
• Developing practical conservation skills and leadership skills

The main duties include:
1. Undertaking a systematic review of the Alderney Grazing Animals Project ( started in 2003 and principally based around a small herd of Guernsey cattle) with the view to the creation of a new 5-year management strategy
2. Working with the Trust’s Conservation Officer and coordinating with the Alderney Conservation Volunteers in practical conservation tasks and the delivery of duties, including:
a. the regular maintenance of the AWT’s two terrestrial reserves and other sites.
b. control of bracken and invasive species
c. upkeep of information points and bird hides,
d. delivering management of heritage sites for an affiliated charity.
3. Supporting the AWT’s Conservation Officer in the implementation of biological monitoring within the reserves and other sites (Butterflies, Moths, Breeding Bird Surveys and others).
4. Supporting the broader AWT team to help plan and run events/walks, predominantly through the summer season.

 

Personal Specification

Essential Requirements:
• An interest and ability in project review and report writing
• An interest in practical land management and some knowledge of livestock management.
• HND or B.Sc. in a relevant field and/or equivalent field experience.
• A sense of humour.

Desirable qualities:
• Some experience of practical conservation.
• Some experience of the use and maintenance of hand tools and power machinery.
• Be versatile with a flexible approach to work
• Show a resilient attitude to problem solving
• Be willing to learn on the job, be intuitive and show initiative
• Be a committed team worker, able to integrate quickly into a team, and the tight-knit island community
• Be motivated and willing to work independently
• Experience working with and managing volunteers.

The structure of the work placement will be as follows:
• The person undertaking this role will act as a full-time placement member of staff, with all the responsibilities and support this entails.
• The placement has a week’s induction and probation period, overseen by the Trust Manager. Placement staff will receive in house training on equipment including tractor, powerscythe, strimmers and hand tools and may include first aid, child protection etc. depending on the applicant. A fixed budget is provided for additional formal training in relevant qualifications to be agreed with the successful applicant.
• The placement includes up to two return flights (approx. total maximum value £560) or sailings to the UK (one for every 6 months of placement completed).
• Accommodation at the AWT’s Essex Farm Field Centre (inclusive of private room, wi-fi access, shared kitchen, sitting-room and office facilities) with rent support to be agreed with the successful applicant
• The AWT will help to assist placement staff in securing part time paid work in parallel to their placement to help cover their costs during the placement.
