Placement Staff

Residental volunteers and staff letting of steam in the snow Residential volunteers and staff letting off steam in the snow

With only one paid member of staff, the Alderney Wildlife Trust (AWT) is only able to achieve much of what it undertakes because of up to 5 or more Placement volunteers, who work in key staff roles for the organisation. We are proud of all the 40 plus placements who have worked with us and are very pleased to see many of them progress rapidly within the conservation sector.

By spending several weeks over the summer as a conservation volunteer, or a year or more  as a member of staff, volunteering with the AWT can have a big impact not only on you but also on our island.

Though the AWT is unable to pay directly it does attempt to support its volunteers wherever possible with contributions towards the cost of living and has links with a number of organisations and businesses which offer additional paid work on island during their time with the organisation.

Accommodation at the Essex Farm Hostel, set up for short term and group stays only.  5 private bedrooms are available for longer term placements with a shared seating room, kitchen, 2 showers, bathroom, broadband internet and use of staff facilities such as Kayaks included.

What could I do with the AWT?

There are several types of residental volunteering which you might consider:

  • Short term volunteer - helping with the day-to-day activities of the Alderney Wildlife Trust (AWT), including practical conservation work, surveying and events (subject to availability) for a limited period usually between 1 week and 2 months.  People taking on this role include 18 year olds plus, on work placement, through to retirees who want to experience something different.
  • Medium term placement - taking on a shorter term contract for the AWT in roles such as Assistant Ecologist, supporting and working with a member of the Trust's permanent staff.  Popular with graduates and work experience at university level.
  • Long term placement - taking on a staff role for the AWT and committing to work for the organisation on a contract, with project responsibility for a range of work in a whole selection of roles.  Popular with graduates and post graduates and offers a chance to take on high levels of responsibility.

It is not necessary to be a member of the AWT to volunteer, so if you have any questions regarding volunteering opportunities please do get in touch!
