Proposed changes to the Greenbelt response form

The Alderney Wildlife Trust (AWT) and Alderney Society (AS) feel constitutionally challenged by the States of Alderney’s proposals to change the legal protection for the island’s Greenbelt (Designated Area). This change would see the 41 year old policy of NO DEVELOPMENT in the Greenbelt, altered to DEVELOPMENT AT NEED for projects which meet the criteria of ‘strategic importance’.

The organisations have also received legal advice suggesting that the States of Alderney’s proposed used of an ORDINANCE to amend the existing law rather than a full change of law by way of a PROJET DE LOI, is inappropriate and would open the changes to potential legal challenges, including from developers.

The AWT and AS are attempting to respond appropriately to the consultation on this proposed change and to do this WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT.

Please not we are consulting with the public to ascertain their views of the greenbelt in general and will conducting a short questionnaire on Victoria Street throughout October.
